Celebrating Our Community

Pioneer Award Invitation

African American Environmental Pioneer Awards

Nearby Nature Milwaukee practices uplifting and recognizing those in Milwaukee’s African American community who are working for a better environment. Since 2020, we have helped organize an awards ceremony every February for Black History Month in honor of stewards dedicated to sustaining the health and vibrancy of our community. These leaders truly reflect the meaning of the Adrinka symbol “Asese Ye Duru,” which means “The Earth has weight,” as their work models and educates communities on the importance of revering and honoring the Earth so that generations to come can continue accessing and enjoying its nourishments.
