Nearby Nature Milwaukee is proud to announce major developments in its ongoing commitment to building healthier, more equitable neighborhoods through active engagement, education, and ecological restoration. In August 2025, the organization welcomed Marina Murphy, consulting member of Denisha Tate & Associates LLC, as its new Program Consultant. Photo of Program Consultant, Marina MurphyMurphy will guide Nearby Nature Milwaukee through a period of transition, with the goal of relaunching in 2026 with a strengthened staffing structure, expanded board capacity, and impactful programming tailored to the needs of the community.

Nearby Nature Milwaukee’s mission centers on working hand-in-hand with neighborhood stakeholders to tackle environmental challenges, promote sustainable practices, and foster a deeper connection to the natural world. Its innovative community programs continue to set the standard for ecological stewardship and education in the region.

A highlight of the organization’s calendar is the upcoming 7th annual African American Pioneer Awards. Since inception in 2022, the awards have honored 62 African American environmentalists for their outstanding service to Milwaukee through environmental conservation, sustainability, and advocacy. This celebration serves as a powerful reminder of the crucial role that African American leaders play in shaping a more sustainable future for the city.

In addition to its awards programming, Nearby Nature Milwaukee is actively addressing disparities in greenspace development. The Lincoln Creek Greenway Workgroup, initiated and led by the organization, seeks to bridge the gap between the highly developed Milwaukee River Greenway and the neglected greenspaces along Lincoln Creek. This initiative emphasizes commitment to environmental justice for all neighborhoods.

Nearby Nature Milwaukee also continues its vital work of preserving and restoring wildlife habitats in Hopkins Hollow, relying on the dedication of volunteers and partner organizations.
